Leonie Dixon- Stage Manager

What Shows have you been involved in?
Tap Dogs, Odyssey and many Malthouse Shows

What made you realise this is what you wanted to do?
I was volunteering backstage and a venue tech told me I was good at it and should look into a career, at the time I was 18 and didn't realise there was even a career in this industry and it wasn't till my 20's that I decided to go for it and looked into courses.

How did you start out?
I started as a volunteer for the local ballet school and amateur theatre company when I lived in London.

What do you love most about what you do?
The People you work with, and the fact you're not doing the same job everyday there is a lot of variety.

What do you find most difficult?
Dealing with people who don't like coming to work

What steps did you take to get where you are today?
Listened to advice given to me, tried my best and took pride in my work

What advice would you give a young person who wants to get into the industry?
Be persistent, listen to advice. I do think to be a Stage Manager you have the skill or you don't but training is helpful and it's all about networking.

What was your most embarrassing stage moment?
We were bumping out a show in Italy and it was like 3am and I was throwing a hammer up and down and it hit me in the head with the whole crew there to see it.

What are the perks of your job?
Working with amazing people and forming some strong bonds. Also it's not a desk job and you never know what your day is going to bring.

What has been your favourite project to work on?
The Fall of Singapore. There was blood, water, mud and naked boys and it was really full on and depressing but at the same time really satisfying.

Has anything ever gone wrong when you've called a show?
One show I was operating the lights as well as calling a show and the board had a spaz attack and I had no idea what was going to happen when I pressed the button. It was just really traumatic.
